Karyn Levitt is a singer/actress/writer who conceives
of and performs unique concert-theatre pieces that interweave music
and theater. Ms. Levitt sings everything from operatic arias to Broadway
standards, swing, country, klezmer, and pop rock. Classical sonnets,
contemporary monologues, jazz standards, art songs, and original pieces
combine in unexpected ways to create a musical/theatrical experience you won't forget.
The Age of Romance: From Vienna to Broadway is Ms. Levitt's latest creation. The show traces the origin of modern
musical theatre to its musical roots in the Viennese operetta. This rapturously enchanting show has received
standing ovations from audiences across New England and had its New York debut at Weill Recital Hall at
Carnegie Hall under the direction of Terrence Montgomery on October 6th, 2007.
Ms. Levitt created her concert-theatre piece, Puccini and His Contemporaries: A Cabaret of Opera and
Theatre, as a multi-textured pastiche of songs, letters, monologues, poetry and reviews. The show offers
a gorgeous and theatrical experience of Giacomo Puccini’s music and letters and has met with acclaim from
audiences at Italian societies, museums, and libraries.
Collaborating with renowned Shakespearean actor/teacher/director,
Jonathan Epstein, Ms. Levitt wrote Shakespeare and the Dark,
a concert-theatre piece about Shakespeare’s love affair with
the Dark Lady of the sonnets.
With composer Leslie Shaak Hitelman, Ms. Levitt conceived of and wrote
Lyrics by Shakespeare: a Cabaret of Shakespeare Sonnet Songs (as composed
by Leslie Shaak Hitelman) and also recorded a CD of the sonnet songs
with the composer, Lyrics by Shakespeare.
This show was performed at The Center for Arts Natick (TCAN) and at Oberlin College.
Ms. Levitt is also available for singing at weddings, parties, with
bands, and for all social occasions.
